Side dish

Side dishes can be vegetable-based dishes or dals which often accompany any main dish such as a rice or a roti. Many North Indian roti or chappati dishes are normally accompanied by dals and a 'sabji', which refers to mixed vegetables cooked with or without gravy.

South Indian main dishes such as plain or other cooked rices are often accompanied by sambar, rasam, poriyal (dry vegetable) etc. Dosa, idli, adai and so on which are wholesome snacks generally served for breakfast or evening tiffin are normally accompanied by sambar and a chutney or masala powders. These are listed separately.
